Massage and WFH
Many people continue to work from home post-covid, and whilst the benefits of this can be huge the toll on our bodies can be noticeable. Where we may once have been sat in an ergonomic office chair with a desk at the perfect height, we could now be sat on a sofa or chair that is not designed to be sat on for long periods of time.
Polly Chadwick, one of our expert massage therapists, has noticed an increase in people needing massage therapy due to working from home. She says “working from home can cause all sorts of postural issues. This could be due to the wrong height desk and chair, spending too long sat in one place or a badly positioned screen”. Polly also notes that being at home can make people work later and therefore this increases their sitting and screen time.
Explaining the science behind it, Polly explains that “When sitting at a desk, the muscles which are engaged include the trapezius, rhomboids, erector spinae, abdominals, hip flexors, and glutes. These muscles are responsible for maintaining good posture and balance while sitting for long periods of time. If you don’t move frequently or stretch throughout the day these muscles can become overworked, tight and lead onto discomfort and injury”.
Massage therapy is ideal to release tension in our muscles and helps to realign our bodies. If we are not able to stretch and be mobile during the day, then booking a massage to help relieve tightness is always a good idea.
If you frequently work from home, remember to move – get out for a lunchtime walk with your favourite podcast or audiobook. Switch off the screen after working hours and do some exercise or stretches – and remember to book a massage!
We are extremely lucky to have a wide variety of therapists at Yellow Door Therapies who can help with these issues, including three massage therapists – Polly, Francesca and Kath. Check out their information pages on the website and get in touch to see how they can help.
